In its most simple form, a lens is just a curved piece of plastic or glass. It redirects the beams of light that bounce off an object so that they come together and form an image.

In digital cameras, the image is captured on an electronic chip instead of a film. The chip inside a digital camera is a light sensor that converts the image into electronic signals. This allows the image to be stored digitally.
